Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Altan on ‘Johnny Boyle’s / King Of The Pipers’. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Altan energies, virtually a rebirth. After debuting at No. 1 last week, Altan’s album Blackwater falls to No. 2 with 934,000, a sales slide of 71%. Unappreciated gift to Folk
Blackwater couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Dark Haired Lass / Biddy From Muckross / Sean Maguire’s. ‘Stur, A Stur, A Ghrb - To me, this is the best song on the Blackwater. Strathspey / Con McGinley’s / The Newfoundland Reel - arguably the best track on Blackwater album. I’ve found myself listening to Tb Mi ‘Mo Shun back to back and back many times. Music of An Gasr Mur / Bunker Hill / D is gentle, never overbearing. I believe Molly Na gCuach Nn Chuilleanbi is one of the most astounding, heartfelt songs ever written. In Jenny Picking Cockles / Farewell To Leitrim / John Doherty’s Altan is at his best. Ar Bhruach Na Carraige Bbine is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. The Dance Of The Honeybees is possibly the best song Altan has come up. Blackwaterside is one of these floating songs. A great put together song.
