For older fans The Nashville Years, Vol. 4 will put a massive smile accross your face. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Burl Ives on ‘Lower Forty’. This album has some very good songs like Lower Forty and Four Initials On A Tree. Lots of variety between tracks. My favorite is Four Initials On A Tree
Four Initials On A Tree is amazing work of Burl Ives. Someone Hangin’ Round You All The Time - A classic Burl Ives track. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of Burl Ives. Hobo Jungle is beautiful, yet underrated track. This song may be the most meaningful. Can’t You Hear Me (2:17) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. Cherry Blossom Song is simple, dignified and effective, Burl Ives refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on The Nashville Years, Vol. 4 is What I Want (I Can Never Have). Can Angels Fly Over The Rockies? still maintains something of a specific flourish. Don’t judge The Legend Of The T. on the first listening. Kentucky Turkey Buzzard is outstanding work of Burl Ives. The Funny Little Show have really caught my ear and imagination. Hard Luck And Misery is nothing but pure genius. I like Pearly Shells because it’s extremely catchy and has awesome drumming. The sound in What Little Tears Are Made Of is really warm and Burl Ives’s signature voice is still very much present. Short On Love as a highlight of The Nashville Years, Vol. 4 contains a ton of exquisite melodies. Who Done It? is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. Two Of The Usual to me is the best you can get from Burl Ives. After you’ve listened to Tell Me, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Among My Souvenirs defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Gater Hollow - I used to hate this song, but now it’s one of my favorites. One of the more genuine-sounding songs is I Ain’t Messing Nobody. Catfish Bill I just LOVE this mix! After about the third Time To Bum Again listen through, I began to believe this song is Burl Ives’s essence. After few listenings I started to like Born For Trouble more and more. Unemployment Check stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty. The Atlantic Coastal Line one is one of the better boring ones. Don’t Let Love Die is a excellent, simple song by Burl Ives at the top of his game. How Deep Is The Ocean is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood. Gater Hollow 1993 is probably the highlight of the album.
