Cal Tjader was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Cal Tjader and Black Orchid together. Black Orchid isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. While no new Cal Tjader album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1993 tour in South America. IT makes me wanna dance!
After about the third Close Your Eyes listen through, I began to believe this song is Cal Tjader’s essence. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Black Orchid is Mambo At The ‘M’. Contigo - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody. Bonita one is one of the better boring ones. |titile| is a sure sign of something most of us are experiencing, maturity. One listen to the sheer beauty of Black Orchid was all I needed. Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe is probably one of Cal Tjader’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. So much energy, so exciting a sound. It’s so catchy, it’s amazing. It’s very catchy and easy to get into which is what you want in a song. This song stands out greatly from the others. The Nearness Of You very upbeat. In Pete Kelly’s Blues it becomes nowhere more obvious that Cal Tjader has yet to define own style. Opening track A Minor Goof shows the best of Cal Tjader. This song may be the most meaningful. Cal Tjader breathes new life into the music in Philadelphia Mambo. Flamingo is a song to savor, to listen to from every angle. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Stompin’ At The Savoy because the melody in the chorus is so good. Laura is outstanding work of Cal Tjader. Cal Tjader offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself.
