Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Coleman Hawkins on ‘Limbo Jazz’. This album has some very good songs like Limbo Jazz and Mood Indigo. This disc has all of the essential Coleman Hawkins classics. Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins is preety good and all the songs have a good meaning behind them.
Mood Indigo is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins is Ray Charles’ Place. I was truly moved when I heard Wanderlust. The opening track You Dirty Dog is very much like you would expect from other albums. Self Portrait (Of The Bean) (3:54) a good melody. Music in The Jeep Is Jumpin’ is exquisite as in all tracks of Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins. This track is just a stunning masterpiece. After you’ve listened to Solitude, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate.
