This is one of the best Cd’s Emmylou Harris has dropped to date. Lead single “Wayfaring Stranger” and “Boxer, The” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. This disc has all of the essential Emmylou Harris classics. To me Emmylou Harris is the best band ever.
This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely. When listening to Roses In The Snow, it gives me such an energy rush it’s unbelievable. When I listen to If I Needed You - (with Don Williams) in my car when traffic ain’t going so good. Emmylou Harris is one of artists that allow his songs like Hello Stranger to stand on their own and be heard. Millworker on Portraits (Disc 2) is solid and easy to listen to. Dimming Of The Day motivates you to get up and do something to improve your life and the life of others. Heaven Ain’t Ready For You Yet is possibly the best song Emmylou Harris has come up. Juanita - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Emmylou Harris. Born To Run sets the tone for the entire album. Price You Pay, The to me is the best you can get from Emmylou Harris. A great put together song. Sweet Chariot is a great opener for Portraits (Disc 2). In That Lovin’ You Feelin’ Again - (with Roy Orbison) the music gets its power. Beneath Still Waters marked the continuation of Emmylou Harris in style evolution. Blue Kentucky Girl - My least favorite song on this album. To Daddy still maintains something of a specific flourish. Evangeline - (with The Band) is one of the more up-tempo songs on Portraits (Disc 2). Save The Last Dance For Me (3:41) a good melody. Mister Sandman - (with Dolly PartonLinda Ronstadt) is almost impossible to review. And I Love You So is the song that really did it for me.
