Personalidade isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. seven years ago, Gal Costa briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Azul”. Since completing 1993’s ‘London, London’, Gal Costa fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Gal Costa “Personalidade” is an amazing album.
Azul is the albums lead single as well as biggest hit. Gal Costa offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. This track is clearly meant to showcase Gal Costa’s vocal abilities. I find myself hearing bits of Ate Quem Sabe here and there throughout my waking hours. Music in Louca Me Chamam (Crazy He Call’s Me) is gorgeous as in all tracks of Personalidade. It took me a little time but I ended up loving Meu Bem, Meu Mal. Canta Brasil make listening to Gal Costa like being in some sort of time warp. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. What sets Folhetim apart is Gal Costa’s innovative and organic way of creating atmospheres. So much energy, so exciting a sound.Although Olha is very melodic it is far from sad. Verbos Do Amor has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Gal Costa’s strong vocals come to the fore. Estrada Do Sol (3:27) Not one of my favorites, but for a lot of people this is one of their best songs. Folha Morta is the most memorable and cool. Festa Do Interior - arguably the best track on Personalidade album.
