Lead single “Lavender Girl” and “Ode To V” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. This disc has all of the essential Jarboe classics. twelve years ago, Jarboe briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Ode To V”. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Jarboe ever.
In Ode To V you won’t find any flashy solos. Shimmer (Instrumental) - To me, this is the best song on the Sacrificial Cake. My Buried Child has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Not Logical - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Spiral Staircase is beautiful, yet underrated track. Yum-Yab is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. Surgical Saviour is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. The song feels complete. Tragic Seed had me crying as I was able to relate so well. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Troll Lullaby. Deflowered is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. It’s such an underrated song. Shimmer rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. I loved Act III the first time I heard it. Vocals of Jarboe in Troll really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm.
