Since completing 1993’s ‘My Romance (Ben Webster)’, Jazz - Various Artists fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Jazz - Various Artists on ‘My Romance (Ben Webster)’. Ben Webster - Jazz Sax isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Jazz - Various Artists ever.
Jazz - Various Artists sings Lil Rousin (Charlie Rouse) in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. Voice and instruments in Laura (Dexter Gordon) complement each other. Capricious (Gerry Mulligan) good vocals. Just Enough (Grover Washington, Jr) is the astounding blend of moody yet optimistic tunes. A Flower is a Lovesome Thing (Harry Carney with Duke Ell) gives good insight into the truths. Jeep’s Blues (Johnny Hodges with Duke Ellington and his) is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. I listened to the opening track Body and Soul (Paul Gonsalves with Duke Ellington and hi) and liked it a lot. Strong, powerful vocals of Jazz - Various Artists in Invitation (Stan Getz) are very impressive.
