Since completing 1993’s ‘Invitation (Stan Getz)’, Jazz - Various Artists fulfilled their contract with Virgin Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Jazz - Various Artists’s debut, ‘Charlie Rouse - Jazz Sax’, does not fit easily into one genre. five years ago, Jazz - Various Artists briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Body and Soul (Paul Gonsalves with Duke Ellington and hi)”. Charlie Rouse - Jazz Sax constantly brilliant.
Body and Soul (Paul Gonsalves with Duke Ellington and hi) is the most memorable and astounding. I was truly moved when I heard Jeep’s Blues (Johnny Hodges with Duke Ellington and his). A Flower is a Lovesome Thing (Harry Carney with Duke Ell) is the more seemingly obscure song on Charlie Rouse - Jazz Sax that bear up best to repeated listening. Jazz - Various Artists offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. This is one hell of a track. This song is dynamic and dramatic. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of Jazz - Various Artists. My Romance (Ben Webster) as a highlight of Charlie Rouse - Jazz Sax contains a ton of cool melodies.
