Damn! isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Stanley Donwood has compared writing for Jimmy Smith’s new album to that on ‘Damn!’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. There is so much to love about Jimmy Smith, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Great Jazz right here!
It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Hi-Fly, which shows, blatantly, how much Jimmy Smith has evolved as a singer. I was truly moved when I heard Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. Sister Sadie is a astounding song and it grows on you. The One Before This is probably the most interesting track on Damn!. This Here is really a nice song to relax and listen too. A unique and uplifting song. Woody ‘n’ You is another favourite of mine.
