This is one of the best Cd’s John Surman with Jack De Johnette has dropped to date. The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon carries a very emotional theme throughout the album. This album has some very good songs like Part I. Nestor’s Saga (The Tale Of The Ancient) and Part II. The Buccaneers. If I may, I suggest “Part I. Nestor’s Saga (The Tale Of The Ancient)”. That one song is amazing!
Part II. The Buccaneers is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Part III. Kentish Hunting (Lady Margaret’s Air) one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard. In Part IV. The Pilgrim’s Way (To The Seventeen Walls) it becomes nowhere more obvious that John Surman with Jack De Johnette has yet to define own style. Part V. Within The Halls Of Neptune is astounding work of John Surman with Jack De Johnette. Part VI. Phoenix And The Fire is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Part VII. Fide Et Amore (By Faith And Love), which shows, blatantly, how much John Surman with Jack De Johnette has evolved as a singer. Part VIII. Merry Pranks (The Jester’s Song) is simple, dignified and effective, John Surman with Jack De Johnette refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Part IX. A Fitting Epitaph defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone.
