It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Johnny Griffin energies, virtually a rebirth. ‘Tough Tenor Favorites’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. While no new Johnny Griffin album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1995 tour in Europe. This is what good Jazz should be.
I have all of Johnny Griffin’s tracks and Blue Lou is probably the most his introspective effort. Although How Am I To Know is very melodic it is far from sad. Ow! has a fun tempo. Johnny Griffin sings I Wished On The Moon in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. Tin Tin Deo is a bit different from Johnny Griffin stereotypical stuff. From This Moment On is a good listen every once in a while.
