There is so much to love about Leon Russell, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Gimme Shelter!: The Best of Leon Russell (cd2) touched my soul like nothing else.
Within the first few notes of Prince Of Peace (Live Version) it’s perfectly clear that Leon Russell is living this song. Leon Russell is one of artists that allow his songs like Sweet Emily (Live Version) to stand on their own and be heard. Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms (As Hank Wilson) hits the heart. She Thinks I Still Care (As Hank Wilson) - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. In The Jailhouse Now (2nd Version) (As Hank Wilson) is worth the money. If I Were A Carpenter… - Leon Russell first major hit. Leaving Whipporwhill defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Time For Love is the most memorable and cool. This is one hell of a track. In Little Hideaway it becomes nowhere more obvious that Leon Russell has yet to define own style. Back To The Island is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. This song may be the most meaningful. Lady Blue - A nice song. Simple and heartfelt closing track She Belongs To Me closes Gimme Shelter!: The Best of Leon Russell (cd2) on a high note. Wild Horses is filled with very deep emotions that will truly touch your heart. Anything Can Happen is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Leon Russell released so far. Faces Of The Children one is one of the better boring ones. Get Gimme Shelter!: The Best of Leon Russell (cd2) and turn on Everybody’s Talking ‘Bout The Young’ if you are going to sip your wine late at night. Put It’s Alright With Me into car stereo for your highway driving
