For older fans Jazz Masters 30 will put a massive smile accross your face. This sixteen-song debut EP shows the promise that Lester Young has. This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by Lester Young. If I may, I suggest “Love Me Or Leave Me”. That one song is amazing!
Strong, powerful vocals of Lester Young in Sometimes I’m Happy are very impressive. I’ve Found A New Baby is the funkiest number on the album. Polka Dots And Moonbeams catches attention immediately, On The Sunny Side Of The Street is the more seemingly obscure song on Jazz Masters 30 that bear up best to repeated listening. (Back Home Again In) Indiana still maintains something of a specific flourish. Prisoner Of Love is one of the coolest songs Lester Young has ever recorded. In A Little Spanish Town actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Lester Young’s face. This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. In Peg o’ My Heart you won’t find any flashy solos. Too Marvelous For Words is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Lester Young released so far. Charming song, great melody. I’m Confessin’ (That I love You) is one of the best records ever. Some of the arrangements found on Jazz Masters 30 are surprisingly edgy. I Never Knew marked the continuation of Lester Young in style evolution.
